THE BEAUTIES OF BOSTON THROUGH THE EYES OF A NEW LONDONER

I was born in Boston, Massachusetts and lived a fair amount of my childhood there. When my family and I moved to Greece, I would go back almost every year and spent my summers with my family and friends. Thanks to my sweet grandfather (as I also mention in my bio) I have been and seen some of the most beautiful places while living there but also when visiting; parks, libraries, museums and markets are a few to mention. My last trip to Boston was many years ago, so you can imagine how happy I was when I was told that I would be going back last January. I was excited that I was going to be able to see how much the city had changed and evolved through all these years. I booked my tickets from London to Boston and couldn’t wait to get on the plain! Today I…

NAN GOLDIN

Nan Goldin was born in September 12, 1953 in Washington ,D.C.  and grew up in Boston with her middle class Jewish parents. Her sister’s suicide had a big impact on her and at the age of 14 she left home and enrolled at Satya community school in Lincoln where she first got her hands on a camera by the daughter of one of her teachers in 1968. It was through her photography that Goldin found meaning and she cherished her relationships with those she photographed. Her work usually features LGBT community. At an early state she was influenced by Andy Warhol’s early films, Federico Fellini, Jack Smith, French and Italian Vogue, Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton While living in downtown Boston at age 18, Goldin “fell in love with the drag queens,” living with them and documenting them.  Unlike some photographers who were interested in psychoanalyzing or exposing these people, Goldin…

ALEC SOTH PHOTOGRAPHY

Hands down Alec Soth is one of the most talented artists of our time. Whether he’s shooting nude newlyweds in Niagara or Johnny Cash’s childhood home, Soth’s images are the most sure-footed fine-art photography of his generation.  He was  born in 1969 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States and he is based in Minneapolis where he lives with his wife and two children. Soth studied at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York and was described as “painfully shy” in his youth. Soth both enjoyed and was inspired by famed photographer Diane Arbus. You can sometimes see a bit of Arbus in Soth’s work. He traveled around the Mississippi River and made a self-printed book with the title “Sleeping by the Mississippi “which included both landscapes and portraits.Curators for the 2004 Whitney Biennial put him in their show, and one of his photographs entitled “Charles”, of a man in a flight suit on his roof holding two model airplanes, was used in their…

Either way, this article will give you a few ideas of what to do and where to could go when you are in this situation. 5 “MUST SEE” MARKETS IN LONDON

London is well known for the great number of covered, outdoor and street markets. Markets in London have their origins in the middle ages and ancient charter; set up to serve the population of the City of London. Today they have a great number of visitors daily and they are spread all over the city. Most open very early in the morning and close early or late in the afternoon. Some specialise in a particular type of product or sell different things on different days. Over time, some markets emerged as wholesale markets selling products such as meat, fish and vegetables. Below you can see a small selection of our favourite markets and some info that will help you decide which one you would like to visit first. Have a look and enjoy! 1. Columbia Road Flower Market Columbia road is very close to Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market in East London. Apart from the flower market…

FROM LONDON TO UTRECHT

UTRECHT         One of my favourite things about living in London is the fact that you can jump on a plane and travel almost anywhere in the world. No need to go very far though, because Utrecht is right around the corner. One of the most beautiful cities in Europe and only a 50 minute flight from Stansted airport to Amsterdam Schiphol. Low cost flights are also very easy to find, search online for Ryan flights, EasyJet flights or Transavia flights.  Utrecht is one of my favorite places to visit. Not only is it a beautiful destination for people who like to travel but it is also a city full of history. One of the things you will remember when visiting Utrecht is the great energy in the air, the happy faces, how friendly people are and the amount of people who cycle. Honestly there are more bikes…
